The Ron Huebner Archives

The Ron Huebner Archives celebrate the work of the late sculptor, object-maker and conceptual artist Ron Huebner with the intent of fostering an understanding, appreciation and recognition of Huebner’s artistic legacy on a national and international level.

Ron Huebner (1959 - 2004) was a pioneering spirit in the Canadian conceptual, sculptural arts arena from the mid 80’s until his accidental death in Amsterdam where he was residing. His installations and individual works were highly original often including sound and sensory elements which were in their individuality at the forefront of exploratory art practises at the time. Over a short-lived but intense twenty year period of his professional career Huebner created a substantial body of memorable work while residing in both Canada and Europe. He challenged not only himself and the viewer, but the system within which he navigated. Huebner’s endeavours were strongly supported throughout his entire career by not only the Canada Council for the Arts, the BC Arts Council but also the Government of the Netherlands. His legacy is born out of true passion and a soul journey to find one’s place in existence through their artistic endeavours. Huebner had a profound belief in the ability of art to serve as a platform from which to raise human consciousness.

In 2014, the British Columbia Arts Council funded the development and preservation of the Ron Huebner Archives and the creation of an extensive website showcasing the magnitude of the work that was created over the twenty years prior to Huebner’s death. This support also led to the retrieval to Canada works that had been in Amsterdam storage since 2004, and in 2018 a retrospective exhibition of select works created in Canada and Europe.

The Legacy Collection

The Archives are focused on the management, maintenance and restoration of existing works that represent Huebner’s artistic oeuvre, with the ultimate goal of collection placement in sustainable institutions that allow the legacy to carry on in perpetuity.

The Archives
The ongoing focus of the Archives is the cataloging, documentation and archiving of the collection and all associated collateral that are part of the Huebner artistic heritage. We are also focused on the restoration and maintenance of works that still exist, as well as, making the work and our resources available for curatorial exhibition purposes.
